PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
MY NOVEL
EDITORIAL SERVICES
I hold a BA and MA in writing, and am currently obtaining a PhD in English. I teach college composition and creative writing, have served as managing editor for a literary magazine, and am open to editorial services for creative work of all genres.
THEN WE IGNITE is a completed debut novel that explores disability, generational trauma, and what it means to be family. As a disabled writer, I began writing this novel when I noticed a pattern of problematic representation of disabled women in speculative fiction.
I offer two levels of editorial services. The first is line editing, meaning I would provide a careful read for clarity, formatting, and consistency in the manuscript. The second is line editing in addition to explanations of my edits and creative feedback (as an educator, this option is the most fun for me).
My Novel
THEN WE IGNITE is a completed new adult fantasy novel that was born when I noticed a lack of representation of disabled female main characters (FMCs) in speculative fiction. As a disabled woman and lover of fantasy, this gap surprised me.
For my MA thesis, I studied over 100 novels, comics, films, television series, and short stories with physically disabled characters. This research informed me of the harmful stereotypes pushed on disabled women in speculative fiction, and I've now presented on this topic at multiple conferences on disability, literature, and higher education.
This novel has been workshopped by multiple published novelists, including New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White, Eliza Jane Brazier, Annie Lisenby, and Hannah Pittard.
